This article outlines some of the structural, legal and cultural reasons why land allotment programs have failed in Central America in reference to "rural women", defined as a set of the heterogeneous lived experiences of women in these areas. It proposes changes to land reform based on current trends and discusses its possible impacts on women. It recommends ways to increase land access to women, opening the debates needed to address the impacts of the agrarian reform and market liberalization in Central America.
